APIEM is the Portuguese Association of Import-Export of medicines that gathers the main wholesalers whose main activity is the international trading of medicines.

HISTORY

Despite APIEM’s formal constitution only in January 2017, international distribution of medicines is intrinsically connected to the history of pharmaceutical distribution in Portugal.

Operating in a country historically open to the world, for decades, various wholesalers have been dedicated to international distribution of medicines. The historical and cultural affinity with Portuguese speaking countries, as well as the proximity with European partners, have made of these, historically, the main markets with which Portuguese operators trade regularly.

More recently, various companies have successfully diversified the markets in which they operate. Today we can clearly state that the Portuguese international distributors of medicines are among the most competent in the world, covering a wide range of products and markets.

Message from the President

Portugal has always been a country considered to be world-oriented, and for good reasons! Our “cosy place” has never had enough dimension to our capacity, skills anda ambition.

We always had and we have been continuously having the obligation of broaden our horizons!

The pharmaceutical wholesaler sector changes nothing in this paradigm. Without having the resources of external markets, it is highly unlikely to conceive the necessary volume to face the installed capacity. That makes it almost impossible to obtain profitability that allows sustainability within operations.

In practice, it is while using the external markets that enables (and provides financial investment) Pharmaceutical distribution operations that excel in Portugal.

The international medicine wholesalers had already been contributing to this sector, for a long time. Those acting as a last resource, in particular in the most recent years of domestic crisis, without having the worth acknowledgement of their hard work, neither the representativeness they should have and they deserved to have. Yet, they have been harmed by the media with no accurate dará, with surreal outlines, without getting an appropriate response.

Those times just came to an end!

Having APIEM founded, the international wholesalers of medicine have a common platform where they can handle queries that may affect the sector. They now na active voice that stands by them and for them.

Quoting Vinícius de Morais: “no matter how long the journey is, the most important is to give the first step forward.” We, at APIEM, already gave that first step and We count on you all: Those who can contribute and want to walk along with us.
